We made it!!!

Well we made it to the big city.... It's raining but not too hard. The Ronald McDonald House is very nice. The room is like a regular hotel room. On the second floor they have a big dining area with a kitchen off to the side. All the guests have use of the kitchen. There is a big play room for the kids. They have arcade games that don't need coins and plenty of craft stuff for them to use.

Culture shock... We had breakfast about 10:30. We went to a little restaurant up the street. 2 eggs, 2 pieces of bacon, 2 pieces of toast and coffee costs $8.95. Now for some of you who live here or in other parts of the world this may seem normal but in Manassas it would cost about $4.00. We stopped to get a few things that the local grocery store. A small box of cereal is 6.85, a 5oz. bag of chips is $3.69. The problem is if we drive up here we can bring this kinda stuff with us. But, if we drive we also have to pay parking everyday which is very expensive. Everything is relative I guess. People here make allot more money but the cost of living is much higher. I guess we will have to plan better.

Cody is feeling pretty good. He is running all over the place. He is having a good time. I hope it continues...

Mickey, one of my best friends lives a block away from Ronald McDonald House, I have an email into her for a neighborhood diner recommendation. There's a grocery store at corner of 72nd & 1st - Food Emporium - not the cheapest out there, but prices lower than what you mention in your post.

Anyways, glad you're there and settled. RMH sounds like a really nice place to be...

hugs to all,
Elizabeth

Mickey & Diane,
Happy to hear you made it to NY and are settling into the Ronnie House. The Ronnie house should have volunteers that can help direct you to more affordable restaurants and grocery stores. Often the Ronnie Houses will have volunteers that come in and cook dinner for the guests... check to see if they have a calendar of events. This will help save a few dollars. Tell Cody hello and I miss him! Keeping you in my thoughts and prayers, always.
Love, Lori

Glad Cody is enjoying the RM House!! Hope all the appointments fall into place well and plans are soon settled.
Cost of living is high !! The restaurant price is about the same as my area, but the CEREAL !! I'd be packing a suitcase full of food next trip !!
Some of our NYC forumites, as did Elizabeth, may have some suggestions.
Prayers and positive thoughts continue. G2G

Glad to hear the trip up went well. Cody sounds like he's settled in. I don't think he's got a problem with the prices. Praying tomorrow goes well. Hope ya'll get a good night sleep. Prayers for continued health and strength.

Those prices sound like Hawaii prices! Whenever I visit the islands, I leave very poor. :(

Glad you made it to NY safely and the RM house sounds very cool. I'm glad Cody's having fun so far. I also hope that continues.

Mickey, glad you made it, and the Ronald McDonald House sounds wonderful. Hope everything works out in MSK. We don't necessarily earn more here, but we just need to work harder at saving money. Prices can vary by more than twofold from store to store within the same block here. I don't know UES too well, but ask the staff they might know. Generally the bigger stores and the chain drugstores have better prices, and the small delis are the most expensive. Let me know if there is anything I can help. Best wishes, runwest
